This study analyzes fire incident data from electric vehicles (EVs) in South Korea over a six-year period, focusing on the technological capabilities of Battery Management Systems (BMS) across various global manufacturers. By examining fire rates relative to the number of vehicles sold, the study offers insights into the effectiveness of BMS technology in preventing fires—a key safety concern for EVs. The analysis reveals significant differences in fire rates among manufacturers, with Tesla emerging as the leader in BMS performance, followed by Kia and Hyundai. The findings underscore the importance of fire rate as an indicator of BMS capability while also highlighting the challenges in directly assessing BMS technology due to a lack of publicly available data on the accuracy of prediction algorithms.
